Shipping Resources

This section will discuss performing tracking information by yourself and understanding measurement conversions.

Importers can track air and ocean shipments by themselves!

For ocean shipments, every shipment has a Master Bill of Lading (MBL) number. The first four letters of the MBL number (SCAC code) indicates the shipping line that is handling the shipment. You can visit the shipping line's website associated and use their tracking service to get an update on your shipment.

For air shipments, you will need the 11-digit Master Airway Bill (MAWB) number assigned to your shipment. The first three digits of your MAWB number indicate the airline that is handling your shipment. You can visit the respective airline's website and enter the MAWB number to track your shipment.

Measurements

Length

Some common units to measure length are inches (in), feet (ft), meters (m). The conversion between these units are as follows:

From feet:

1 ft = 12 in

1 ft = 0.3045 m

From meters:

1 m = 3.28 ft

1 m = 39.37 in

From inches:

1 in = 0.833 ft

1 in = 0.0254 m

If you have a measurement in the unit of feet but you would like to convert it to meters, just multiply the number of feet by 0.3045. For example, 5 ft is equal to 1.52 m (if you multiply 5 by 0.3045).

Weight

Weight is measured in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb). The conversion between these two units are as follows:

1 kg = 2.2046 lb

1 lb = 0.4536 kg

To obtain the total weight of your shipment, add up all the units (boxes, cartons, drums, etc.) and the pallet weight that they are on (if applicable). The total weight including the pallet is known as the "Gross Weight" (G.W.). The weight the shipment minus the pallet is known as the "Net Weight" (N.W.).

Volume

Volume is measured in cubic meters (cbm) or cubic feet (cuft). The conversion between these two units are as follows:

1 cbm = 35.2 cuft

1 cuft = 0.02832 cbm

To obtain volume in cbm, measure the length, width, and height of your shipment in meters and multiply them all together.

*Shipping lines will charge you based on the "maximum" space your shipment takes up. Any empty space on the pallet will be considered as chargeable for volume-based calculations.
